Bringing Empire The Boardgame to Life!

Creating the visualisation for Empire The Boardgame has been a fascinating journey of many variations and versions over the years, refining what it is we want people to get from the artwork in terms of excitement and mood - while trying to appeal to as many types of players as possible. We hope we’ve done a great job and we will certainly be interested to know how people respond to the look and feel of the game when they play it. Even getting the wooden pieces correct and proportional with each other as well as with the board, so that the triangle pieces and circular tokens all align was a task of much trial and error. Coming up with decals for the pieces that would retain some level of subtlety was also a tricky one, and deciding on a definitive look for the game when there are so many possibilities and ways of presenting, now that was always going to be a tough one! But the biggest time-consumer of all by far was the board, making an historically accurate map which still conveys a spirit of the old and hint of mystery and majesty. We dare not count up the hours spent on variations of the board over the years, all painstakingly researched. The look of the game always feels like an evolution to us as we are always critiquing our own work, and it will continue to grow throughout the expansions and link in with our other games which we are really excited about.
